Medical images and medical imaging in general are known as one of the most important tools and facilities in the field of diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Medical images contain a lot of useful information that is not always easy to extract from humans. Therefore, the existence of systems based on image processing and information extraction can be of great help in extracting and assessing the data in medical images. One of the main research fields in Sinatos Group is the processing of medical images in different categories such as MRI images, CT scans, radiology, mammography, endoscopy, etc. Our research in this field aims to facilitate diagnostic and treatment processes related to medical images and increase accuracy and improve the quality of performance in these cases. Therefore, the general goals of Sinatos Group in this field include the following:

·       Improving and enhancing medical images

·       Computer-aided diagnosis of diseases

·       Screening for important diseases


Considering the variety of medical imaging systems and methods, as well as the variety of tissues and organs in the patient’s body, the research fields related to image processing are categorized as follows:

·       Brain images:

ü Processing and integration of brain MRI images

ü brain volume measurement by anatomical regions using MRI-T1 weighted images

ü Segmentation of intense spots in brain MRI-T2 weighted images

 

·       Cardiac images:

ü Processing cardiac MRI images to measure the functional parameters of the heart

ü Segmentation of heart cavities in echocardiography images

 

·       Mammography images:

ü Processing of mammography images to detect small calcium particles

 

·       Radiology images:

ü Processing radiology images of the left hand to measure bone age

 

·       Ophthalmological images:

ü Segmentation of fundus images to extract retinal vascular network

ü Processing of OCT images to detect glaucoma in the early stages of the disease


Among the most important projects carried out by Sinatos Group, which are based on image processing, the following two can be mentioned:

·       ESE, A powerful software for enhancing the endoscopy stream to better diagnose the abnormalities

·       MCFinde, A powerful software for detecting microcalcifications over mammographic images
